When do boys actually need a Latin shoe?

For Juvenile I and Juvenile II categories, WDSF rules set a maximum heel of 2.5 cm – the same for both Latin and Standard dances. In practice this means a dedicated Latin shoe with a higher heel simply does not exist for these categories. One pair of standard black shoes covers both disciplines.

The situation changes from Junior I (age 12–13). Here WDSF permits a heel of up to 3.5 cm for Latin dances, while Standard shoes stay at 2.5 cm. From this category onward it makes sense to have two separate pairs – and this is exactly where the true Latin shoe comes into its own.

Why a higher heel for Latin dances?

A higher heel shifts weight slightly forward onto the ball of the foot, which is technically desirable in Latin dancing: it supports correct posture, activates the calf muscles, and enables smooth hip action. Without the correct heel height this technique cannot be practiced properly.
