Why aren’t regular shoes enough?

Ballroom dancing – both Latin and Standard – places demands on footwear that ordinary children’s shoes simply cannot meet. The sole must allow controlled gliding and rotations without catching on the floor. The upper must support correct foot position for the various stepping techniques. Without dance shoes these dances are practically impossible to perform safely and correctly.

Healthy foot development comes first

A child’s foot is still developing until around age 12 – the bones, ligaments, and arch. What WDSF says: permitted heel heights

The World Dance Sport Federation (WDSF) sets maximum heel heights for competition categories. The following limits apply to children’s categories:

Age is determined by the year of the competition – the older partner decides. Limits apply to all WDSF competitions. For training outside competitions there is no height restriction; however, we recommend observing the competition limits during practice as well.
