Why Men’s Dance Shoes?

Why men’s dance shoes? What’s the point? Aren’t they all the same boring dress shoe? Don’t they slip? Aren’t sneakers better? Well…

Almost every man who starts dancing — salsa, kizomba, bachata, you name it — goes through the same thought process: “Why do I need dance shoes? My regular shoes are fine.” “They’re actually better, because they don’t slip.” “Why would I spend money on this?” There are plenty of reasons.

The Leather Sole

Yes, a leather sole slips more than rubber — and that’s exactly the point. Leather is chosen for its ideal properties on a dance floor, particularly its controlled grip. The shoe needs to allow a certain amount of slide for spins, so that your joints — especially your knee and ankle — can rotate together with your foot. If your shoes slip too much, it’s usually one of two things: the sole is dirty and needs cleaning with a wire brush (available at dance supply stores), or your technique needs work — long steps, weight not centred between your feet, or incorrect footfall. It takes practice. That’s all.

Better for Your Partner

Do your partners complain that you step on their feet? That’s usually down to footwork — steps that are too large or imprecise. There’s another complaint that fewer women say out loud, because they assume it’s their own fault: back pain and leg fatigue after dancing. It sounds unrelated to shoes, but it isn’t. A rubber sole allows you to stand with your weight shifted far outside your own feet. That imbalance puts strain on your partner’s back and legs — and on yours too.

Design and Comfort

Men’s dance shoes are also simply more comfortable than most everyday dress shoes. But there’s more to it than comfort. The shoes you wear say something about you. There’s a saying about women — that you can tell a lot about a person by their shoes. Apply that logic to men on the dance floor, and most of them are wearing trainers.

Ask yourself: are you using the right footwear for the right activity?
